The Spring Hill Raiders are moving on to the Class 4A second round thanks to one of the state’s biggest upsets Friday.

The Region 4-4A fourth-seeded Raiders (6-5) went on the road and handed Region 3-4A top seed and previously-unbeaten Stone Memorial (10-1) its first and only loss of the season 28-6.

For one of the only times this season, it was Spring Hill’s defense that led to the victory. It was the first time this season the Raiders gave up single digit scoring.

The dominant display by Spring Hill’s defense was a surprise, as the Panthers went into the game averaging 38.7 points scored per game and the Raiders were giving up 33.2 PPG to opponents.

If Spring Hill’s defense, which has given up just 20 points in its last two games combined, can stay tough, the Raiders could be in good shape in the second round. They advance to play Page (7-3), which beat them 26-25 on Sept. 2 on a touchdown in the final minute of the game.
