Common Sense Digital Citizenship

school headerChrist Presbyterian Academy has been recognized as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship school by Common Sense Media, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology. CPA is one of only three schools in Tennessee with this certification.

The Academy has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to use the immense power of digital media to explore, create, connect, and learn, while limiting the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying.

“We applaud the faculty and staff of Christ Presbyterian Academy for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” says Rebecca Randall, Vice President of Education Programs for Common Sense Education. “CPA deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace, and participate ethically in society at large.”

The Academy has been using Common Sense Education’s innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources, which were created in collaboration with Dr. Howard Gardner of the Good Play Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to Internet safety, protecting online reputations, personal privacy, managing online relationships, and respecting creative copyright.

CPA’s Technology Integrationists Shelly Francis (ES), Patrick Jordan (MS), and Cody Taylor (HS) have also received recognition as Common Sense Certified Educators, in addition to Director of Instructional Technology Jon Kelley. Kelley spearheaded the certification process on behalf of the school.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship certified school. This honor demonstrates our commitment to educating and equipping our students to use technology safely and responsibly,” says Kelley. “I am very proud of the time and energy our technology integration team has poured into this important niche of 21st century skills.”
