CPA first graders had a special opportunity this spring to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville to welcome Franklin native Cindy Bryant and her son Caleb to a brand new home of their own. Habitat for Humanity’s Nashville chapter serves four counties: Davidson, Wilson, Dickson, and Cheatham. Since it was established in 1985, Habitat has built or recycled more than 875 homes, and served more than 2,000 family members with new places to live.
Students began their efforts to raise money for the family’s new home in April with a school-wide penny drive collecting more than $3,100. Students took turns collecting daily donations of loose change on campus during morning and afternoon carpool.
“This is a great opportunity for some of our youngest students to learn how small contributions like pennies or nickels, when given together, can make a big difference,” says first grade instructor Susan Herron.
Penny drive beneficiary Cindy Bryant visited campus to meet the students raising money for her home. All four first grade classes gathered to hear Cindy’s story, ask questions about the new home and her son Caleb, and present Cindy with her check. The service initiative culminated on the Habitat build site of the Bryant’s home, where students helped haul gravel for the sidewalk, drew pictures of the house, and wrote encouraging Bible verses on the walls.
“We’re very excited for our new home and thankful for everyone that could be a part of our story,” says Cindy.
