CPA Can’t Comeback This Time

Murfreesboro, Tenn — Last Friday night CPA trailed 6-0 and 7-1 but somehow were still able to advance to the State Tournament with a come from behind 8-7 win. So when they fell behind 5-0 today, there was no reason to count them out.

The Lions began to roar back into the game, but today it wouldn’t be enough as they fell to Knoxville Catholic in the first round of the D1-AA State Tournament 5-4.

Knox Catholic threatened the first two innings but didn’t get to CPA starter David Bates until the third inning, when Austin Kearney put the barrel of the bat on the ball and lifted one off the left field wall giving the game it’s first run and Knoxville Webb a 1-0 lead.

Kearney would come around a score on a 2-out infield single on a chopper up the middle by Turner Whitfield.

The Lions would pull Bates in the fifth with 2-on and nobody out and that’s when things started to go even further down hill for CPA. The Irish benefited from a hit by pitch, pass ball and a dropped throw to first to extend the lead to 5-0.

CPA then started their rally which led to the most controversial part of the game. With runners at second and third and two outs, Jordan Baker slapped one to the left side, scoring two and advancing to the third on the wild throw the plate. The ball rolled all the way over to the the Knox Catholic dugout where it appeared the third baseman stepped into the dugout meaning the ball would be dead and Baker would be awarded home base.

That was the case and the score was 5-4 until a series of arguments brought Baker back to third and Knoxville Catholic starter, Ethan Elliot got the next batter to strikeout ending the threat.

CPA will now await the loser of Lexington and Sequoyah
