This year alone nearly one in eight of our neighbors will face a breast cancer diagnosis, and nearly 300 of them will turn to the YMCA for support during or following treatment. Thanks to the Y’s After Breast Cancer (ABC) program, which launched in Williamson County 15 years ago, local survivors are able to get the specialized wellness and nutrition guidance they need on their road to recovery, and some of them will soon take to the runway to celebrate survival. Below is a glimpse into the experience of a few of this year’s brave models:
Linda – a 9 year survivor shares,
I learned from the YMCA’s ABC Program that I was never alone. I always had my survivor sisters by my side.
Celeste – a 2 year survivor shares,
I feel like this program is one of the few out there that truly wants you to get better with no questions asked. They just genuinely want to assist you in healing and living your best life. The ABC program will love you to life.
Michelle – a 5 year survivor shares that she
gained the confidence to take control of my body after a double mastectomy.
Phyllis Dye – diagnosed in September 2014 shares,
The ABC program challenged me mentally, physically, and spiritually. It gave me a community to bond with during the challenging season after my diagnosis. I gained insight into the possibility and hope for changes I wanted to make in my life and how to build a vision to work toward the goals I set for the future. Every participant in our class was an inspiration to me. They are all beautiful, compassionate, and amazing women.
A total of 625 women have been helped by the ABC program since it became part of the Maryland Farms YMCA’s community support services, and on Tuesday October 6, 28 of them will model the latest fall fashions from Dillard’s Cool Springs at the YMCA’s Heroes in Heels fashion show at The Factory at Franklin – Liberty Hall. This year’s title sponsors are Gary Force Acura and presenting sponsor VACO. Along with Dillard’s Cool Springs, this event is made possible thanks to many generous sponsors and partners. Other companies who make this event possible are: 4 Wall Lighting, AIG, Tennessee Oncology, Williamson Medical Center, Regions Bank, Studio Gaven, LabeLive, Grannis Photography and Cindy Rich Make-up artists for their support of this amazing event.
The event seeks to increase awareness and support of the Y’s efforts to meet the targeted health needs of people in the community. ABC is a part of those efforts and helps survivors regain strength and range of motion following cancer treatment. Since the program launched at the Cool Springs YMCA 15 years ago, its reach has grown to serve survivors in five Middle Tennessee counties. ABC is also offered at the Bellevue, Clarksville, Rutherford and Robertson County YMCAs and is open to both Y members and non-members. Participants receive a 16-week YMCA membership along with a customized exercise plan developed by a Pink Ribbon Certified® personal trainer, nutrition counseling with a registered dietician, lymphedema education and the support and encouragement of caring YMCA staff and fellow breast cancer patients and survivors. The program truly emphasizes growth in spirit, mind and body through intentional building of community via curriculum-based small group counseling and fitness experiences, and the Y is proud to have served over 2,400 survivors in our Middle Tennessee community over the last 15 years.
The community can support the Y’s healthy living work and cheer our local survivors by attending the upcoming fashion show. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available for $40 in advance, $50 at the door on the day of the event. A 1:1 VIP table can be purchased for $750, and covers the cost to send one woman through the entirety of the program. This special seating will include exclusive food and bar service. Premium seating tables for 4 are also available for advance purchase for $250. To purchase advance tickets visit us at event registration.
