Civil War History Meets Modern War History at Carter House

On Thursday, August 29th at the Carter House, the Battle of Franklin Trust will hoist an American flag that flew over the skies of Afghanistan. The ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m.

“We are so proud to have this flag flying at The Carter House,” said COO Eric A. Jacobson. “From the American Civil War to Operation Enduring Freedom, we at the Trust strive to honor dutiful Americans and their service. We thank 1st Lieutenant Munsch and the soldiers stationed at SHARANA – and all those serving at home and abroad.”

This national treasure flew above U.S. troops at Forward Operating Base SHARANA in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on June 6th, 2013. It was flown by Task Force WOLVERINE, FOB SHARANA, Paktika Province, Afghanistan, in honor of the Battle of Franklin Trust.

“This particular flag has special significance to the Trust,” said Jacobson. “Leighton Munsch is currently serving in Afghanistan. His wife, Olivia, has worked for the Trust as a historical interpreter for approximately two years.” 1st Lieutenant Munsch, 1st Squadron 89th Cavalry Regiment, was deployed to SHARANA earlier this year. He will be reunited with Olivia after nine months this October.
