Camden Run Game Swarms Fairview

A three touchdown performance by Yellow Jacket running back Hunter Caldwell was not enough for the Yellow Jackets. Fairview would enter the fourth quarter with a lead, but all-state running back Deshawn Brown would put the Lions ahead late in the game to give Camden the 32-28 win and the Class 3A Region 6 crown. The loss dropped Fairview to 6-3, 4-1 in Region 6 play.

Camden Sprints Out To Early Lead

The Lions would open the game with a long drive capped by a Kory Wilson 3 yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion to put Camden on top 8-0. Fairview would respond with a sustained drive of their own, which was finished with a 1-yard Hunter Caldwell touchdown run, but the 2-point conversion was no good. After the first quarter, Camden led 8-6. The Yellow Jacket defense would stop the Lions on 4th down, but the offense sputtered after a holding call against Fairview. Camden would begin their next drive with a 47-yard flea flicker for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion made the score 16-6 in favor of the Lions. Camden would force another Fairview 3 and out, then score on a 60-yard screen pass to Deshawn Brown. Another 2-point conversion would send the teams to the locker room with Camden leading 24-6.

Jackets Unable To Hold On After Third Quarter Rally

Fairview would open the 2nd half of play by taking it to the Lions on the ground with a combination of Hunter Caldwell, Jake Beathard, and Hunter Zimmerman. Fairview would shrink the Lions lead after a 2-yard Zimmerman touchdown run, cutting the lead to 24-13. The Yellow Jackets would recover a surprise onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. Again, Caldwell, Beathard, and Zimmerman would lead the Jackets on the ground, but a big 3rd down pass to IMG_1094Sam Sanborn to get Fairview inside the 10-yard line. Caldwell would run the ball in from 1 yard out, and then Zimmerman would complete a pass on the rollout to Jake Beathard on the 2-point conversion to cut the Lions lead to 3. After forcing a Camden 3 and out, Fairview would go on a 90 yard drive, before Caldwell would then break 3 Lion tackles and scamper 24 yards to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game after 3 quarters, 28-24.

Camden would get into Fairview territory yet again, but the Yellow Jackets would turn away Camden on a fake punt attempt. Fairview would look to their ground game, primarily on the legs of Zimmerman on rollouts for big gains. The Yellow Jackets would stagnant in Camden territory before being turned away on fourth down. Camden would convert with a big drive on the ground, finishing on the legs of Brown for a 22-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion would give Camden the 32-28 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Fairview would mount a final push for the victory, reaching Camden territory easily. However, the Jackets would have two final shots at the endzone that would fall just incomplete, giving Camden the victory.

Fairview will look to rebound next week on the road at Harpeth (4-5, 2-3). The loss still gives the Yellow Jackets second place in 3A Region 6, so they will host a first round playoff game in two weeks.
