Bridge Construction to Cause I-65 Shutdown

Along with the month-long construction planned for the Crossings roundabout, residents of Spring Hill and the surrounding area are in for some lengthy lane closures on I-65 in order to repair the bridge that was damaged in a tragic tanker fire in mid-August.

Closures for the bridge on I-65 will begin on Tuesday, September 16, and will last all the way until Monday, September 22. The week days (September 16-18) will see one lane closed in both directions to prepare for bridge removal.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is working to complete the project. Over the weekend (September 19-22) both directions of I-65 past mile marker 61 will be shut down in order to take down the bridge and start construction on a brand new bridge.  Traffic will be rerouted around the bridge by exit 248. Traffic will exit at Peytonsville Rd/Goose Creek Bypass and reenter I-65 on the other side.

TDOT is working closely with contractors to minimize future lane closures and the impact to motorists following the shutdown for bridge demolition,” said Heather Jensen, communications director for TDOT.

As bridge construction continues into the fall, lane closures are to be expected, but TDOT is hoping to avoid a complete shut down for the rest of the project.

Also planned for Spring Hill is a 30 day construction project to fix the roundabout at The Crossings. The construction will be done in three sections, requiring traffic to be periodically rerouted in a different direction around the circle, to allow part of the circle to remain open at all times. Flaggers will be used to direct and circulate traffic.

The traffic circle leads into The Crossings at Spring Hill, the city’s largest shopping center, where the roundabout was built incorrectly by its original private developer.

The entrance and exit into The Crossings will not be blocked at any time during the work, according to Utilities Director/Assistant City Administrator Dan Allen.
