A proud Mike Woodward took the field last night as the Bruins won their first home game of the season.  Brenwood took on the Hendersonville Commandos (3-1) at home to give them their first loss of the season.

Arriving to the game, one could almost smell the spirit in the air.  It may have been the 65 degree “official football weather” or the fact that it was Homecoming.  Whatever the case may be, there was just something unique about the night.

Right into the game, the Commandos kicked to put three points on the board.

Senior Austin Wells was making some tremendous efforts on the field.  With a little less than eight minutes left in the first quarter, Wells ran in a touchdown for Brentwood to bring the score 7-3.

Hendersonville answered right back by gracing the end zone with a Commando touchdown (7-10).  Three minutes left in the first, the black and gold intercepted quarterback Aaron Maher’s pass to gain control of the ball.  It was third down and nine at the 35, and Brentwood was battling hard.

Into the second, the Commandos drove the ball right into the end zone to make the score 7-17.

Wells ran in a 48-yard touchdown for the Bruins.  It was 14-17 with 10:05 to go in the half, and the crowd was ignited!  A hard fight with the ball the entire second half, Hendersonville scored a TD with just 3:19 left in the half (24-14).

Halftime wasn’t in the works just yet, at least, not for the Bruins.

Maher sailed a pass straight to senior Andy Schumpert with just seconds left in the first half to give the Bruins a three-point window going into the second half (21-24).

At halftime, the presentation of Homecoming began, along with the magnificently talented Brentwood High School band.  The picture looked as if it could have come straight out of a story book.  Quarterback Aaron Maher was crowned Homecoming king, and the announcement of queen shortly followed with a tie between his escort and a member of the Bruins Marching Band.

Starting off strong in the third, Maher completed a pass to no. 29 John Robertson with 6:35 left.  Brentwood fought hard throughout the rest of the quarter.  The crowd was in spirit as the Bruins recovered a fumble in hopes of keeping the ball away from the Commandos.

Only minutes into the fourth, senior Hunter Anderson drove it right into the end zone to bring the Bruins back on top (28-24).  The nail-biter continued as Hendersonville continued to try and gain another TD.  The Commandos succeeded with 7:27 in the game to put another seven points up on the board for the black and gold (31-28).

The play of the game was set into the works with just minutes left. The Bruins sailed it in to senior Caleb Tyler to complete the final touchdown and seal the game-ending score of 35-31.

The Bruins decided to take a knee to end the game, and the fans swarmed the field in a maddening dash to congratulate their Bruins on the first win of the season.  Head coach Mike Woodward circled his players around him and the roar of the victors filled air.

Brentwood will kick-off at home next week against Dickson Co. starting at 7 p.m.
