Brentwood Preschool Evacuated Just Before Roof Collapsed

Quick action by staff at a Brentwood preschool on Tuesday likely prevented injuries or worse to nearly 100 children.

After strong rainstorms hit the area Tuesday afternoon, staff members at The Academy at Powell Place starting hearing cracking sounds, Brentwood Fire Chief Brian Goss said.

At approximately 4 p.m., staff decided to quickly evacuate 96 preschoolers, removing them from harm’s way shortly before the roof collapsed.

The evacuees sought shelter in a nearby office building while Brentwood Fire and Rescue arrived. Crews, for hours, worked to remove the two to four inches of water that flooded the school.

“Staff should be credited for their excellent work in evacuating the structure,” Goss said. “There is significant damage to the building which will require substantial repairs.”
