Brentwood Police Warn About Gmail Scam

Brentwood Police want to make people aware of a new scam involving Gmail accounts.

What happens: hackers send a text that asks you about a password reset on your Gmail account, prompting you to reply STOP and asking you to provide a verification code. But beware, this is a scam. Here’s what the text message conversation might look like:

Remember that Gmail or any other web email service will never ask if you don’t want to do something with your account. You didn’t ask for a password reset, so you shouldn’t be asked about one.

Do not reply to the text (doing so will tell the scammers that they have reached a valid number). To prevent losing your account to hackers, it’s a good idea to have two-step verification set up on your Google account, advises the Brentwood Police Department.
