Brentwood Hangs On To Advance To State Finals

The Brentwood Bruins matched up against Bartlett in the Semifinals of the high school football playoffs tonight. The Bruins came in after an incredible offensive performance to take down the Franklin Admirals last week 55-34.

The Brentwood Bruins punched their ticket to the state championship game tonight as they beat Bartlett 24-14.

Bartlett received the ball first to start the game. The Bruins were not phased though as their defense stood strong and blocked the Bartlett punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. The Bruins led 7-0 early.

Bartlett drove the field and were in great position to come away with points, however on a fourth down the snap went over the QB’s head and the Bruins took over around midfield.

Brentwood drove the short field and scored on a short run by Cade Granzow. The Bruins led 14-0 with seconds reminds remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Bartlett would score on a short run to get on the board. However, they missed the PAT making it 14-6 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

On the following drive, the Bruins used up a lot of clock and were helped out by a personal foul penalty by Bartlett that kept the drive alive and the clock running in the second quarter.

The Bruins were knocking on the door with just two minutes and thirty seconds remaining in the half. They would score a play later as Granzow got his second rushing touchdown of the night. They led 21-6.

On the following Bartlett possession, the Bruins intercepted a pass and set up their offense in scoring position with two minutes remaining before half. The Bruins had time, but they turned it over as Granzow threw it as he was hit and threw an interception. Bartlett had the ball back with one minute and seventeen seconds left in the second quarter.

Bartlett drove the field managing the clock well and they were in field goal range, however they were unable to spike the ball in time to give their kicker a chance. The teams entered the half with Brentwood on top 21-6.

To start the third quarter Brentwood went three and out and was forced to punt. Bartlett did not waste the opportunity to chip away at the lead. They scored on a short run from a yard out and then converted a two-point conversion to cut it to 21-14.

The following Brentwood drive would be a long one. After a long pass play was called back for a penalty, the Bruins marched down the field. They had a fourth and goal, when the snap went over the QB’s head and it was turnover on downs. Bartlett had a chance to tie the game.

The third quarter came to an end as Bartlett was driving. Then early in the fourth quarter, Bartlett was forced to punt the ball back to the Bruins. Brentwood used up as much clock as they could as they moved down the field. They were inside the five yard line, but were held to a field goal attempt. The Bruins converted the field goal try and increased their lead to 24-14 with five minutes and ten seconds remaining.

Bartlett was not going away anytime soon. They connected on a huge pass play to set them up in scoring position. However, the Bruin defense stepped up again and stopped Bartlett causing a turnover on downs.

The Brentwood Bruins ran out the rest of the clock to secure their spot in the championship game next week.
