Brentwood Basketball Star Suing Yale Over Expulsion Following Sexual Assault Allegation

Former Brentwood Bruin Jack Montague

Former Yale basketball captain and Brentwood Bruin Jack Montague is suing the Ivy League institution after he was expelled from the school following an allegation of sexual assault.

Montague, a 2012 Brentwood grad, was expelled from Yale on February 10th after a panel found that he had nonconsensual sex with a female student in October 2014. A statement issued by Montague’s attorney Max Stern stated that Montague and the female student had a consensual relationship and the dispute is about the last of four sexual encounters. Stern says the woman claims to have not consented, while his client says she did.

Stern also said that the panel decided to expel Montague based on a “preponderance of the evidence” and that his client was a “whipping boy”, following a report from the Association of American Universities that was critical of Yale in their handling of sexual assault allegations.

“We strongly believe that the decision to expel Jack Montague was wrong, unfairly determined, arbitrary and excessive by any rational measure,” Stern said. “Yale has been oblivious to the catastrophic and irreparable damage resulting from these allegations and determinations. The expulsion not only deprives Jack of the degree which he was only three months short of earning, but has simultaneously destroyed both his educational and basketball careers.”

The lawsuit comes days after Montague’s former basketball teammates clinched the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 54 years. The team has shown support for their former captain by wearing shirts featuring Montague’s nickname and the school’s name backwards. The team has apologized for these actions amid allegations and the new lawsuit.

Montague was previously District 11-AAA and Region 6-AAA player of the year and helped to lead the Bruins to three district championships and a regional title. He is still the all-time assists leader in the history of Brentwood High School.
