Eagles Take Fight Out Of Irish
Even though Father Ryan’s option game looked to give the Irish more looks on the ground, the Brentwood Academy Eagles were able to run past Father Ryan by a score of 45-7 Friday night. The Irish were able to slow BA early by taking time off the clock with their option offense, keeping the powerful Eagle attack on the sideline, but BA was able to show late why they are the prohibitive favorite in Division II-AA.
Turnovers Slow Offenses In First Half
Father Ryan would open the game with the ball, but were unable to move the ball. After an Irish punt, the Eagles were able to run the ball with Jeremiah Oatsvall, Prince Momodu, and Brieon True, before Jack McDonald punched the ball in from 3 yards out to give the Eagles the 7-0 lead. BA was able to force a Father Ryan punt, but BA fumbled the short punt and the Irish recovered. Father Ryan was unable to turn the fumble into points, giving the ball back to BA. The Eagles would drive the ball into the redzone, before the drive would stall, calling on Isaac Way to hit a 30-yard field goal to give BA the 10-0 lead.
On the ensuing Father Ryan drive, Coutrell Plair picked off Zach Pfeifer and returned the ball 30 yards for an Eagle touchdown, making the score 17-0. Father Ryan had their most successful drive of the night on their next drive, but Pfeifer was picked off in the endzone by Evan Beddoe. BA moved the ball into the redzone again, but would fumble it back to Father Ryan. The Irish punted the ball back to BA, and the Eagles would capitalize with a 40-yard Prince Momodu touchdown run to set the halftime score at 24-0.
On the opening play of the second half, Camron Johnson fielded the Father Ryan punt on the hop and raced down the left side 97 yards for a touchdown. BA would force a punt and use their powerful ground game to put on another touchdown on the board with a Marcos Harris 1-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, Father Ryan would get on the scoreboard after a 5-yard Collin Brown touchdown run, making the score 38-7. On the final drive of the evening, Marcos Harris would ice the game with a 33-yard score, making the final score 45-7 for the Eagles.
Brentwood Academy coach Cody White said of the game, “I’m proud of our kids. We want to make sure we’ve got home field advantage, so we had something to play for. [Father Ryan] have always played us tough, always made things difficult…it’s a big deal for our kids.”
The win moved Brentwood Academy to 7-1, 5-0 in district play. The Eagles have secured a first round bye in the Division II-AA playoffs and also claimed home field advantage for the playoffs, as well. Next week, BA hosts University Christian (FL) before closing the regular season against McCallie.
The loss spoiled the Irish’s celebration of their “golden anniversary” homecoming game. Father Ryan’s record fell to 4-4, 1-3 in district play. The Irish next go on the road to Ensworth, then close the season at home against Baylor.
