Brenda Hughey Play Ground Dedication at Johnson Elementary

Monday, April 22nd was a special day for Johnson Elementary and Brenda Hughey, former FSSD Special Populations Supervisor with the dedication of the pre-school play ground Hughey was instrumental in acquiring. After 38 years in education Hughey has moved on to the next phase of life and was honored to attend the dedication ceremony of the play ground at Johnson Elementary. This was one of the last projects she worked on with FSSD before retiring.

playground-dedicationJohnson Elementary’s Heather Soder teaches pre-school and realized a need for her students so they could play on age appropriate facilities. She enlisted the help of Hughey and the result is a beautiful covered play area the children can enjoy for many years to come. Hughey developed a $39.000 grant proposal for the structure but had retired before the project was complete. Hughey has taken up a position with Vanderbilt as a student teacher evaluator and loves working with future teachers.

At the ceremony the children all thanked Hughey and Soder for their caring and were reluctant to leave the play ground when it was time to go home. “It’s just beautiful,” said Hughey when looking at the finished product. A large blue awning covers the play space to keep the little ones out of the sun. This was an addition by the district that cost $10,000. Soder who has been teaching pre-school at Johnson Elementary for 2 years believes this addition will make for happier, healthier children.
