BOMA to Vote on Parks Comprehensive Master Plan Tonight

The Board of Mayor and Alderman will meet for a public work session regarding the Parks Comprehensive Master Plan tonight from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Board Room.

The Franklin Parks Comprehensive Master Plan evaluates existing parks and recreation sites, provides improvement recommendations and creates a vision for the future of the park system in Franklin.

According to the feedback from Franklin BOMA and the public, the staff will be removing two trail segments from the greenway portion of the plan: the Lancaster Drive connection and a trail along the eastern bank of the Harpeth River.

After the plan was originally publicized, a multitude of residents came forward, saying they oppose the Harpeth River trail for security purposes and it’s geographic location in the city’s flood plain. But initially, when the park consultants had collected studies from the area, the trail was the second highest priority for residents.

A new layout for this route has been created, which shows the trail running along the river from Pinkerton Park, to Collins Farm Park and ending at the Eastern Flank, off of Lewisburg Pike with a connecting path alongside Thompson Alley. This section of trail would need to be an elevated boardwalk between the river and the railroad due to the steep terrain.

The boardwalk would extend approximately half way to Murfreesboro Road/ Highway 96 to a point where the terrain allows for the trail to be at grade along a shelf above the river.
