Big Turnout Expected At Tonight’s WCSB Meeting

Tonight’s WCSB meeting should be well attended if Thursday night’s workshop session is any indication. An overflow crowd attended and listened as proposal for Dr. Looney’s contract extension and proposed pay raise were discussed by Board members. This meeting was hours after Metro Nashville Public Schools decided to make Dr. Looney their choice for nomination for the same position.

According to tonight’s agenda, the public will be allowed comments before the discussion turns to the Board on the proposals for Dr. Looney’s contract are discussed. 2 proposals were made by Board Member Jay Galbreath:

1) Dr. Looney’s Williamson County salary would remain at $201,928 (a difference of approximately $78,000 from Metro’s offer of about $280,000). However, Dr. Looney also would get a one-time retention bonus of $30,000 if he stayed through July 30, 2016 and receive an annual five percent pay increase at that point. However, in a course of protecting the school district, Dr.Looney would pay the District six month’s salary and benefits (approximately $100,000)if he quit and took a position in another Tennessee school district when more than 30 months remained on his existing contract. But, if the Board terminates Dr. Looney, without cause, he would be bought out of the contract unless he secured a job of equal or more pay.

2)Discussion of increased paid vacation and sick days.

Board Member Beth Burgos also suggested at the workshop that a provision be made to the contract, and any future contracts for any Director of Schools, that calls for termination if they become involved in the politics of school board elections. It was agreed by the Board that this be discussed by the Policy Committee.

Metro school officials expect to select a new superintendent on July 23.
