Battle Ground Academy is pleased to announce the recipients of its Alyne Q. Massey Honors Scholarships for 9th graders new to BGA for the 2019-2020 school year:
Catherine Lydia Schreiber, daughter of Robin and Thomas Schreiber of Thompson’s Station, Tenn., previously attended Page Middle School, where she was on the Honor Roll.
Iris Rubyclaire Carter, daughter of Melanie and Gray Carter of Brentwood, Tenn., previously attended Brentwood Middle School, where she received Academic Achievement recognition.
The Alyne Q. Massey Honors Scholarship was established in 2015 by L.H. (Bill) Armistead III, a member of BGA’s Board of Trustees and a 1969 graduate, in memory of his mother. The scholarships provide partial tuition for high achieving students with strong grades and Independent School Entrance Exam scores.
“We are delighted that Catherine and Iris are our newest Alyne Q. Massey Scholars. They represent the type of students whom we are able to attract with this scholarship” said BGA Head of School Will Kesler. “In addition to being outstanding students, they are interested in the arts, athletics, and extracurricular activities both at school and in their communities. I am delighted to see what they do with the opportunities they will have here at BGA and to see how they help make our school a better place because of their involvement.”
Mrs. Massey, who passed away in 2012, was the widow of the late Jack C. Massey, a Nashville entrepreneur and businessman. She was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and served on its Board of Trustees for three decades. She was a co-founder of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a trustee at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, a former reporter for the Nashville Banner and head of the Women’s Division of Commerce Union Bank (now Bank of America). She was also a board member of the Blair House in Washington D.C., which is a temporary residence for foreign leaders. The Law Library at Vanderbilt University School of Law is named in her honor.
