Brentwood vs. Ravenwood

The Lady Bruins took off with a bang in the “Battle of the Woods” two-game series on Friday night.  Brentwood (17-1) took a 55-36 win over the Lady Raptors.

The first period set the tone for the game with the Lady Bruins up 15-points on the scoreboard, while Ravenwood (4-10) was down by 9 with six points.  Heading into the second, Brentwood held the Lady Raptors to 13-points, only allowing seven-points on the board.  The Lady Bruins put up over that amount scoring 18 and landing a buzzer shot by Marissa Anthony to roll into halftime up 33-13.

It was time to hit the court and back into the game at Ravenwood High School, and the Lady Raptors came back on fire.  The team put up 14-points on the board in the third period and held the Lady Bruins with 8-points.  Sophomore Bailey Swayze and junior Alexis Ahlert were putting up points, along with senior Colleen Leyer’s three-point shot right into the game.

Hitting the court into the final quarter, Brentwood was up 41-27 over Ravenwood, and it was Brentwood’s Olivia Shealy to put up a three only minutes into the game.  The Lady Bruins kept with this strong hold into the fourth and held Ravenwood to only 9-points, while scoring 13 more to end the game, 54-36.

Brentwood has had an excellent season so far, and its one loss hangs off the shoulders of Farragut (15-1) by a single point.  The Lady Raptors have seen a tougher season this year, taking ten losses so far.  The Lady Bruins remain at the top of the district (5-0), while Ravenwood (2-3) ranks just above Centennial (1-3) at the number five slot.

Since the 2009-2010 season, Ravenwood has only taken two wins over the Brentwood.  Last year, the blue-and-gold made it all the way to state, falling 37-83 to Riverdale.

Next week, the Lady Bruins will travel over to Kenwood (6-7) on Monday and return to Williamson County on Friday to face Franklin (8-7, 4-1). This team is definitely one to be watching out for this year in women’s basketball.

And after taking a win over Summit (7-8, 1-4) last week, 34-32, the Lady Raptors will face the Spartans once again.

These two Williamson County talents will meet head to head again in the second rendition of the “Battle of the Woods” on Friday, January 31st.
