Enjoy Expanded Tours of Historic Franklin Sites This Summer

The Battle of Franklin Trust is now offering Extended Tours of The Carter House and “Behind the Scenes” tours of Carnton Plantation, will begin Saturday, May 12, 2016. Both tours offer a special and comprehensive look at two of Franklin’s most historic properties.

“These tours play a vital role,” said The Battle of Franklin Trust CEO Eric Jacobson. “Such tours offer a unique and unforgettable experience. To be able to offer additional emphasis on the battle, on slavery, and on the agricultural aspects of both sites is hugely important.”

The Extended Tour at The Carter House will begin with a brief history of the site, and lead into a detailed walk of the property. Guests will begin outside with a brief overview of the early history of the site and the Carter family before heading inside the home. The tour will then lead guests through the family garden where a detailed discussion of the battle will occur. The tour will end with a direct focus on slavery, how it led to secession, and was ultimately destroyed by the war.

Carnton’s behind the scenes tour will allow visitors to experience never before seen areas of the historic home. The tour will begin with main areas of the house, before exploring the basement, third floor and back balcony. This unique tour will be led by James Redford, who has worked at Carnton for over 20 years. By seeing rooms never before accessed by the public, guests will be able to further understand the history of the McGavock family, who was directly impacted by the Battle of Franklin and saw their home used as a field hospital for Confederate wounded.

Extended Tours at The Carter House are Tuesday through Saturday at 2 p.m. Behind the Scenes tours at Carnton Plantation will be offered every Thursday at 10 a.m. Tickets for both tours are $25 for all ages and reservations are recommended.
