Basketball: CPA Fights for Semifinals

Christ Presbyterian Academy cruised passed Brainerd 77-43 Thursday afternoon to advance to the Class AA semifinals.

Braxton Blackwell turned it on in the second half, scoring 18 of his game-high 31 points in the final two quarters.

Tyger Campbell added 15 points and eight assists for the Lions.

CPA trailed for a majority of the first quarter before going on a 7-0 run to start the second.

A four-point lead at halftime quickly jumped to double-figures as the Lions shot 82.6% from the field in the final 16 minutes of play.

Brainerd cooled from the floor during that span, making only 4-of-27 second half attempts. CPA’s full-court pressure in the third quarter should be credited for the downturn in shooting, as Brainerd was 41.2% on field goals when the Lions were not pressing in the first half.

CPA dominated on the boards too, winning the battle 44-20 – the margin was 19-14 at half.

Kentrell Evans was Brainerd’s only player with double-figure points, tallying 11.

The Lions advance Friday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal game against the either Haywood or Carter.
