Scam alert! Sheriffs Office Reports Telephone Scam

The Williamson County Sheriffs Office sent out an alert today telling residents to be wary of callers posing as IRS agents asking for money on a pre-paid debit card.

On Thursday and Friday four people in Williamson County reported being hit with the telephone scam.

In April the IRS released a statement saying that they will never ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card wire transfer.

Scams like these have been happening all over the country. At the beginning of 2014 the IRS released a list describing the “Dirty Dozen” common scams. And in Williamson county there have been reports of people posing at the IRS, the electric company even the Williamson County Sheriffs office in order to get some kind of bogus payment.

Most agencies will request payments by mail. Mail scams happen as well, so always be wary of where you send your money.
