Accountability is a great thing and many of us need it to stay focused in certain areas of our lives. However, it is important that you remember who or what you are being accountable to.
We have often heard the term, “accountability partner.” Having an accountability partner is a great way to keep reminding yourself of the task at hand, or to remain focused. The reason being is that we have to “report” to someone when we make a commitment to having them as our accountability partner.
I challenge you to think what actually happens with an accountability partner. Often times we can fall victim to being concerned with letting down our partner, that we forget to be accountable to ourselves. Please do not misunderstand me, I think having an accountability partner is great, however, it is vital to be accountable to ourselves first and foremost. If we cannot live with the decisions we make, how will we ever have peace?
Be accountable to yourself and then surround yourself with a person or group of people that support you and can be a sounding board. Don’t get tangled up in trying to be perfect so as to not have to admit to someone else failure. The focus then becomes the failure and not the steps to success.
