Winstead Elementary fifth grader William Hayes takes ownership of his learning in a way that’s rare among students his age.

Teachers say it’s not uncommon for the 11-year-old to seek out new challenges when it comes to his schoolwork. That, combined with his generous demeanor, made him the perfect choice for this year’s Academic All-Star award.

“William is a joy to have in class,” said his teachers. “He is a thoughtful student who always tries his best. William is also kind to everyone he meets, and he truly personifies what BE NICE is all about. We are thrilled to name him Winstead’s Academic All-Star.”

William says he has enjoyed his time at Winstead and will be sad to leave the school.

“I’ve been here for so long, and I’ve created a bond with the teachers and the students I have met,” said William. “The teachers are always smiling and doing a good job. They teach us the right stuff.”

In a true show of maturity, William’s math teacher says he will sometimes come to her requesting sixth grade math problems just so he can challenge himself.

“Math is my favorite subject,” said William. “I want to be an architect when I grow up and that involves a lot of math.”

When it comes to motivation, William says he doesn’t have to look far for inspiration.

“I know my education is important.” said William. “My mom works in the financial field, and she is very smart. So is my dad. He works for Nissan. I know I will need a good education to have the job I want when I grow up so that’s why I work so hard.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
