Eleven-year-old Tomas Goncalves is a positive role model for students at Nolensville Elementary.

Not only is he a hard worker in the classroom, but Tomas is also well-known for his generosity which is why teachers and administrators at Nolensville were quick to name him as the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year.

“Tomas goes out of his way to be an example for others,” said his teachers. “He is not one who looks for recognition for what he does because it is done out of the goodness of his heart. He works hard as a student and as an individual, and he is always volunteering to help the younger students.”

Tomas and his family moved to Tennessee from New Jersey two years ago. Although leaving his friends behind was tough, Tomas says making the transition to a new school wasn’t as hard as he had feared.

“The teachers at this school were friendly and so were the kids,” said Tomas. “It was actually easy to make friends. People are nice here.”

Tomas says math is his favorite subject, and he enjoys being part of the school’s math club because he likes a good challenge.

“Math is kind of easy from my perspective, but that’s not why I enjoy it,” said Tomas. “I enjoy it because there are so many different ways to learn math and so many different things to learn.”

With statements like that, it’s no surprise that Tomas hopes to one day be a teacher, just like the ones who inspire him every day.

“I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember,” said Tomas. “I like hanging out with other kids. I love what we learn in class, and I think it would be fun.”

And that’s why Tomas says he will continue putting his education first as he looks toward the future.

“If you’re not doing well in school you might not get a good college education or a good job,” said Tomas. “A good education can help you be really smart and succeed in life.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
