Ten-year-old Schuyler Hoogerheide is the kind of student who always gives 100 percent. She’s also a caring individual who epitomizes the district’s BE NICE motto.

That’s why administrators at Sunset Elementary chose her as the school’s Academic All-Star.

“Schuyler will always give the extra effort to make sure she understands the content,” said principal Karen Caldwell. “She works hard to do what is best for her friends, school and community. She is always the first to step up and help a friend in need or be a friend to those who need one.”

Schuyler and her family moved to Williamson County from Maryland when she was in the third grade.

“It was kind of scary at first,” said Schuyler. “I didn’t have any friends here because I didn’t know anyone.”

But it wasn’t long before Schuyler began to feel right at home at Sunset Elementary. In fact, one of the things she enjoys most is learning all about Tennessee.

“My favorite subject is social studies,” said Schuyler. “I used to learn about Maryland history, but here I get to learn things about Tennessee that I never knew. It’s really interesting.”

Schuyler gives her best effort for good reason. She knows the importance education plays in her future, even if she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do yet.

“Later in life, we’re going to use all of this knowledge,” said Schuyler. “We may not know how we’re going to use it, but it’s important to have these skills for later in case we need them.”

Receiving this award makes Schuyler feel like her hard work is being recognized.

“It feels really good, because I try to do my best,” she said. “I’ve been rewarded for that, and now it feels like I’ve done my best and everybody knows it.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
