Those who know her describe fifth-grader Mia Hasan as a bright, thoughtful, caring young lady who always puts her best foot forward. So it came as no surprise when teachers and administrators at Hunters Bend Elementary selected her as the school’s Academic All-Star.

“Mia is a positive example and outstanding role model to her peers,” said Hunters Bend Principal Yolanda Blackburn. “Her achievements on the soccer field carry over to her efforts in the classroom.”

Having attended Hunters Bend since kindergarten, Mia says her experience at the school has been amazing.

“The teachers here are great,” said Mia. “They really care about everyone. They also teach a lot of good stuff, and if you don’t understand something they will help you.”

Mia’s two favorite subjects are science and writing.

“I love the experiments we get to do in science,” said Mia. “My writing teacher is Ms. Waddell. She does a great job of teaching us proper writing.”

Ask Mia what she wants to be when she grows up and there’s no hesitation.

“A soccer player,” said Mia. “I’ve been playing since I was about three-years-old. Right now, I play midfielder for a travel team.”

Mia says she’s excited to begin school at Grassland Middle next year so that she can hopefully join the soccer team. In fact, her love for soccer serves as motivation in the classroom.

“I really want to have all A’s so I can keep playing my favorite sport soccer,” said Mia.

In the meantime, she plans to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with being named an Academic All-Star.

“I’m very excited and happy to win this award,” said Mia. “I did not know it would be me.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
