Eighth-grader Maddox Guthrie knows there is no shortcut to success.

The 14-year-old was chosen as Grassland Middle School’s Academic All-Star for his strong work ethic and determined spirit.

“My education is very important to me,” said Maddox. “I want to go to a good college when I grow up so I can get a good job. To be successful in life, you have to start early.”

Maddox has attended Grassland Middle since sixth grade and says he enjoys the freedom of middle school.

“I like how you kind of have to monitor yourself and keep everything in check,” said Maddox. “The teachers here also try to help individually and not just teach the entire class. It’s nice to have them because you know they care about the students.”

Maddox says his two favorite subjects are social studies and science.

“I like social studies because I just think it’s fascinating to learn about history,” said Maddox. “As for science, I like all the discoveries and learning how everything works.”

Maddox is also a proud member of the school’s very first robotics team.

“In sixth grade I got my own robotics set,” said Maddox. “I was already in love with it so I thought this would be fun. It’s also challenging because you have to work well with your team, and it’s sometimes hard because we all have different personalities and strong points.”

As someone who loves a good challenge, Maddox says he might like to pursue a career in engineering. In the meantime, he’s excited to finish the semester at Grassland Middle School and move on to the next chapter in life.

“I’m excited and nervous about high school,” said Maddox. “I am looking forward to it though. I like trying new things.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
