Eighteen-year-old Kobi Boone is proof that hard work and determination pay off.

After struggling in her first few years of high school, the Fairview High School senior is now a dedicated student who was just recently named the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year.

“Through hard work, determination and maturity, Kobi has completely turned it around,” said Fairview High Assistant Principal Ellen Browne. “She shows up to school with a smile on her face; she works diligently in all her classes; and she is a joy to be around.”

Kobi freely admits she wasn’t always a model student.

“I hated school,” said Kobi. “It was a challenge to come to school each day because of some of the things I was dealing with at home.”

But things began to change during her junior year.

“At a certain point it just kind of clicked that I needed help,” said Kobi. “Theresa Hemmerly and Amy Lazarov were two teachers who were both there for me when I needed them.”

After rededicating herself to her studies, Kobi says she now enjoys school, one subject in particular.

“I love math,” said Kobi. “Some people find it challenging, but I just love solving problems.”

Outside of class, Kobi’s favorite thing to do is to spend time with her family.

“My family is amazing,” said Kobi. “I took them for granted when I was younger. It took me a long time to realize how much they mean to me.”

After graduation, Kobi plans to attend the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Dickson to study cosmetology with the hope of one day opening her own salon for underprivileged youth.

“I love that something as simple as cutting hair can help someone feel better about himself or herself,” said Kobi. “My dream is to one day have my own shop for kids who feel alone and bring some joy to their lives.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
