Fifth-grader Kelly Alonso is a dedicated student who’s known as a quiet leader among her peers at Fairview Elementary School.

That’s why teachers selected her as this year’s Academic All-Star.

“Kelly consistently puts forth her best effort in completing both in-class assignments and homework,” said her teachers Rita Craig, Gary Lawson and Karen Omer. “Kelly is friendly to all her classmates. When working in groups with other students, Kelly exhibits cooperation, patience, and kindness. Because of her exceptional qualities, we expect Kelly to achieve great things in the future.”

Kelly moved to Fairview from Nashville during fourth grade. She says the transition was challenging at first but she’s happy to be here.

“I didn’t know anyone when we moved here so I had to get used to talking with people I barely knew,” said Kelly. “It’s really nice because there’s a lot of things I didn’t learn at my old school that I have learned here, and this school a lot more advanced.”

When she’s not in school, Kelly likes to play outside, read books and spend time with her family. In fact, she credits those closest to her with giving her the inspiration to do well in school.

“My mom and my dad motivate me,” said Kelly. “They encourage me to work harder and to set goals for myself.”

And while becoming an Academic All-Star may not have been a goal, Kelly says winning the award has been a dream come true.

“It feels great,” said Kelly. “I did not expect this. It’s nice to be recognized for what I’ve done.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
