Kind, caring and determined. Those are just a few of the words used to describe Brentwood High School senior Kelli Dixon.

On February 6, BHS Principal Kevin Keidel surprised Kelli with the news that she had been chosen as the school’s Academic All-Star.

“Kelli is an amazing student,” said BHS Principal Kevin Keidel. “No matter the obstacle, she never gives up and she never complains. Kelli is an inspiration to us all, and we’re proud to name her our Academic All-Star.”

Driven by a desire for independence, 18-year-old Kelli takes her education seriously and says she feels fortunate to be a student at one of the best schools in the nation.

“This school is helping me prepare for college and beyond,” said Kelli. “The teachers here care about their students, and I’m grateful that I am being given the tools to succeed.”

Having been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, Kelli has not let it hold her back from being active in the school.

“I ran cross country in tenth grade, and I was a wrestling cheerleader this year,” said Kelli. “I like being involved in school. Cross country was hard at first but every time I ran I felt like I was exercising my body which was good for me. The wrestling team performed really well this year, and I’m so proud I got to be a part of their success.”

After college, Kelli wants to be a teacher so that she can inspire her students the way her teachers inspired her.

“I have a passion for kids,” said Kelli. “I love being around children, and I want to be a kindergarten teacher after college.”

Although she hasn’t yet determined which college she plans to attend, Kelli says she’ll continue working hard to reach her goals.

“I just know that I want to be independent,” said Kelli. “I know that if I want to have a job and have my own house that I need to go to school and get a career. So that’s what I’m going to do.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
