Teachers at Sunset Middle describe 13-year-old Jordyn Stuart as a hard-working student who always has a smile on her face. So it’s no surprise she was recently named the school’s Academic All-Star.

“Jordyn is conscientious, self-directed, thorough and always motivated,” said social studies teacher Sue Hooper. “She accomplishes this while being humble, kind and considerate to her peers and adults alike.”

Jordyn, who has attended Sunset Middle since sixth grade, says there are certain aspects of the school she will surely miss when she makes the transition to high school next year.

“I like the people here, especially the teachers,” said Jordyn. They’re all really nice and they push you to do well which I think is good.”

Jordyn says her favorite subject is math because she enjoys the challenge.

“I just like everything about it,” said Jordyn. “It’s kind of fun. I have to work at it, but I still like it.”

Outside of the classroom, Jordyn enjoys playing piano, volunteering with her church and competing as part of the Sunset Middle track and cross country teams. When she grows up, Jordyn says she might want to be a teacher or a veterinarian.

In the meantime, Jordyn pledges to keep working hard as she prepares for high school.

“I think school is important because if you want to have a good job then you need to always do your best in school,” said Jordyn. “Also, I don’t like to get bad grades so that keeps me going even when it gets tough. I just want to do my best.”

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
