A “Spaz-tastic” Mint Julep

I met him around 20 years ago when I moved to Franklin, and my life has never been the same. Mark “Spaz” Morris, is kind-of a local celebrity here in Franklin. Spaz, as he is affectionately known, has been slingin’ fine libations for a long time. Known as the “go to” guy for fine wines and liquors at Red Dog Wines and Liquor, 1031 Riverside Drive, Spaz took time to share his Mint Julep recipe that he has used for years at Derby time. And his Derby Pick.

Spaz’s Mint Julep

2oz Woodford Reserve Kentucky bourbon
1/2 oz simple syrup
5-6 large mint leaves
1tsp mint julep sugar (or cane sugar)

Place mint leaves in the bottom of the glass.Sprinkle the sugar on top and muddle (don’t over do it, you just want to crush the sugar into the leaves and break them open )
Fill with ice, add simple syrup, then Woodford.
Shake well and enjoy !

Fast Track Julep

2oz Woodford

1/2oz Eli Mason Mint Julep Simple Syrup

Pour Eli mason over ice, add 2oz of Woodford, shake and garnish with fresh mint sprig and GO !

DERBY PICK: We asked Spaz for his Derby pick, and he admitted he was a little behind on his “studying.” So he said to “Go with the grey,” which seems appropriate, since the grey horse is named Frosted !

Watch Friday morning when we break down the Derby field and ask you to give us your pick before the big race on Saturday. We’ll also give you some suggestions for great places to watch the race.
