Trish Townsend recently opened Townsend Style in Brentwood. As a celebrity stylist for years, she has worked with Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton,Vince Gill, Alan Jackson and John Rich. We stopped by her newly opened boutique grand opening and asked her a few questions about why Brentwood, how Barbour 3 came to share the same space and what is it that men do that they really need to stop doing?

1.

After years of celebrity styling, why open a store now?
I have been styling award shows, music videos, commercials, tours, weddings and other big events for nearly 25 years. I was looking for a new challenge to broaden my love of styling and my amazing fashion connections. Being able to open a high end men’s store with the likes of designers John Varvatos, Kent and Curwen, The Kooples and many more was a great way to combine my styling skills and my contacts and bring an interesting shopping experience to town.

You could have opened a store anywhere, why Brentwood?
Brentwood has been my hometown for 15 years. I love it here, There is nothing like my men’s store anywhere in Nashville and there is no men’s store in the Brentwood area. So many people are moving into the Brentwood area and the new business growth is astounding! On the top of my list for the location i wanted was PARKING!!!  I have the best situation here, you can pull right up to my back door and pop in for a quick or long shopping experience. That was a very important aspect for men and their shopping needs- painless and fun. After so many years of battling parking garages, parking meters and crowds, I just had to have a more convenient place for my clients. Shopping at a mall is not for everyone.

Soon after you opened, Barbour 3 opened as well, did you decide to open together?
Melissa and I had tossed the idea of a men’s clothing store/barbour shop/tailoring shop for several years. I  finally just decide to give the men’s store a go alone. I fell in love with the building and started putting a plan into motion. It took me a few months to get it all together, as far as  build out, and buying for the store. I  started out practicing on friends and family.( I had a lot to learn about running a store and waiting patiently for my clothing lines to come in and fill the racks).  I also  had a cool party with a big group of women who love to shop for their men and for themselves in my doghouse(a room full of non sizable accessories for women’s including jewelry, scarves, handbags etc.), I  invited Melissa to come and promote some of her Parlour 3 wears and meet the ladies. She was blown away by what i had made of my space and by the end of the next day she had signed a lease for her space!!

We know you style celebrities but what about the corporate guys in Brentwood?Actually, I wanted to open a store to cater not only to celebs, but to business men as well. We have corporate type suits and designs for corporate parties!  Business attire does not always have to be stuffy. Men are discovering how to add a little bit of personality to a boring outfit and they realize that it helps them stand out.

Tell us about the local designers you carry at Townsend Style?
Vincent Peach is not only a local jewelry designer but he has become a good friend. I have always been drawn to his pearl, silver, and leather combinations because he takes the pretty pearl(freshwater and Tahitian) and adds a twist with the the leather or some other natural element. I have been to his design workshop/showroom and I am fascinated at the skill his uses to create each design. We have customers come in to my shop who are collectors of his work. each is a piece of art. Debe Dohrer is another jewelry designer I have met who has an interesting design element which incorporates using chains, nuts, washers bolts etc and somehow makes it look feminine and edgy. Moonshine boot wax is produced here in Nashville and uses a combination of beeswax, carnauba wax along with other natural ingredients to create an all natual, non toxic shoe shine product. Tied Up in Style is a line of scarves created by master tailor Loretta Thompson. they are very colorful and add a bit of fun to any outfit. Looks great with denim jackets, suede jackets, and casual shirts.

We couldn’t end our interview without asking the very critical question:
What is the biggest mistake that you see men make with  their wardrobe?
Fit. but everyone makes that mistake. That is why I had “good tailoring” as part of my plan. It is nearly impossible to purchase a suit or most clothing with-out the aid of a tailor.  Designers base their collections off of one fit model. It is up to the consumer to take that suggestion of a design and make it work for them by having it fitted to their body style. I asked master tailor Loretta Thompson to join my cause at TOWNSEND. She agreed and moved in next door. Just one more convenience for my guys. a new outfit, tailored to perfection and a hot shave…its good to be a guy….and me.
