With the colder weather, we all tend to hibernate more. If you are looking to update your bookshelf but are low on funds, we have an answer. Over at HGTV, we found these five things to look for on your next garage sale adventures.

Collections

If you hit a garage or estate sale at the just the opportune moment, you can score a collection. But remember when displaying it, less is more. Only showcase a few pieces not, all ten pieces. Rotate your display so you can enjoy the entire collection.

Books

The trend right now is to have the same color binding on your shelf. Remove the dust jackets and reveal the book binding, look for the same color or colors that complement your decor.

Use Functional Items

Be sure to include functional items on shelves, too. A retro fan, a small lamp or a clock is visually interesting and serves a purpose, rather than being pure eye candy.

Repurposed Bowls

Skip the usual clay pot and look for colored, patterned or textured bowls. Whether it’s a repurposed salad bowl for your trailing pothos plant or a dessert bowl for your succulents, a yard sale is the best place to pick up one-of-a-kind planters.

Baskets & Boxes

Baskets and boxes not only add texture and color, they’re a clever way to store crafting supplies, games or small toys out of sight. Keep an eye out for vintage sewing or picnic baskets with lids and handles.
