5 Things to Know About Apple Music

Apple’s new streaming service, Apple Music, is hitting the market soon, so here are five things you need to know about the new service.

1. How long can you listen to Apple Music for free?

There will be a three-month free trial version available.

2. How much will Apple Music cost you?

Once your three free months are over, the service will cost $10 per person or $15 for a family share plan.

3. Where does that $10 go in the music industry?

Apple is offering U.S. music owners about 71 percent of the revenue and a bit more for music abroad. The industry standard for royalties is 70 percent, so Apple is going in above that figure, but other streaming music services do it differently.

During the three month trial period, Apple won’t pay music owners anything for songs that are streamed, according to an article by the Wall Street Journal. Spotify has a limited ad-ridden free service for PC and a more limited free streaming service on mobile devices, and it pays royalties for every song played, free or under paid subscriptions.

4. How much will that $10/month get you?

You get access to over 30 million tracks from the iTunes Store, plus recommendations based on what you like and listen to. Also, the Beats 1 streaming radio channel, which will be available to all users with an Apple ID, will give you perks such as skipping an unlimited number of tracks, saving tracks and connecting with artists and other fans.

5. When will the service become available?

Apple Music will be available to consumers on June 30 of this year.
