5 Things You Should Know About Botox

With age comes some pesky problems, like wrinkles! No doubt you’ve heard of Botox and what it can do for those wishing to say ‘goodbye’ to their wrinkles, but maybe you’re not sure if its right for you. For many, Botox can be a safe option for reducing wrinkles. Here’s 5 things you should know about Botox.

What Is It

Botox is a safe, diluted form of the neurotoxin Botulinum Toxin made for cosmetic (and now other) purposes. The solution that is injected is a solution made from a powder and saline fluid that gets injected into the muscle.

How it Works

The Botox solution is put into a microneedle and injected into the muscle that creates the wrinkle. Immediately, nerve impulses are blocked from reaching the muscles, allowing the muscle to relax. In turn, the skin over that muscle can relax and the wrinkles soften and often disappear. For full effect, treatment usually takes 1-2 weeks.

Requires Regular Treatments

Botox treatments aren’t permanent. This is because nerves tend to regenerate and find new connections so that your body is still working right. This means that the Botox “wears off” after a while. For the first treatments, the typical length of effect is 3 to 5 months, depending on skin elasticity, age, and the treatment site. However, after a while, the nerve starts to understand that it isn’t supposed to be as active and therefore less Botox is needed. At this point, treatments tend to last anywhere from 6 to 8 months.

A Temporary Adjustment for Your Week

For the week before and after receiving the treatment, most doctors recommend avoiding alcoholic drinks, anti-inflammatory medications, vitamin E lotions and supplements, and aspirin.

After having the treatment, they also recommend that you not lie down for 3-4 hours following the treatment.

No, Your Face Won’t be Frozen

This myth was largely perpetuated by TV and movies. Many times, Botox has been the comic relief in media, showing someone unable to move their face after too many Botox injections, but when performed properly and in moderate amounts, you will still be able to react and communicate in a lively way with Botox injections. While Botox does affect the areas you wish to smooth out, it doesn’t affect the overall muscles or prevent you from showing expressions. Essentially it does make the face smoother, but it doesn’t freeze it.
