 What is Pogonotrophy?

The act of cultivating, or growing and grooming, a moustache, beard, sideburns or other facial hair.

2

When did your obsession begin with beards and moustaches? Why the obsession?

I wouldn’t say an obsession as much as a natural progression. One day I started to become a man and my face insisted upon being covered in hair. I simply obliged. From then on I just enjoyed the lifestyle of facial topiary.

Jonah whaler 1You’re VP of MPS. What areas does that cover? Tell me about the national and international and how you play a part. Who can join? What are the parameters?

As the VP it is my job to assist in the functions and endeavors of the club. At times I may assume and perform the duties of the President in the event of his absence.
At the national level, I have competed at numerous events of other clubs across the country. Each of these events are designed to raise funds for local charities. Recently I competed at a national event taking home third place in the donegal category. I have yet to grace the international stage but the World Beard and Moustache championships are being held in Austin TX in 2017. Most of the club plans to attend.
All are welcome and encouraged to join the Metropolitan Pogonotrophy Society. We have men and women of various backgrounds who have come together in the spirit of community, camaraderie and charity. Everyone starts as an associate member and moves up from there.

Tell me about the Brooklyn Competition. What was the event, how you fared, how many competed etc….?

I did quite well at the Brooklyn competition. I took home third place in the Donegal category. It was America’s annual National event. In total, 300 people competed in 17 categories. The event raised over $5,000 for NYFD.

goup beardsAre there local competitions? Do you have a website? How can the public find out more?

There are most certainly local competitions! Our club puts on an annual event the second weekend of July, Showdown at the Southern Gates. We also hold various smaller competitions throughout the year. This December 19th we are involved with a comp put on by Beardforce Films, the 2nd annual Southern Gentleman’s Beard and Moustache Competition. After the comp is the 5 year anniversary of the Metropolitan Pogonotrophy Society. Naturally we can be found on most social media and more information is available through our website: Mpsnashville.com
