MAK Studio is a new salon  of three stylists who set out to open their own salon.   Kristen Womack, Marie Griffes, and Allison Cage chose the combination of the first letter in their names so as to denote this is a group effort to start a business.  We sat down with them to learn more about their passion for this business and why they chose Franklin to open their  first  salon.

1.

Can you tell us about yourselves?

Kristen Womack: I moved to Franklin in 2006 with my college sweetheart who is a Franklin native. We have one little girl who will be starting kindergarten in the fall.
Marie Griffies: Im from Newnan Georgia, a little town south of Atlanta. I moved to Franklin in 2011 and fell in love with this town and the people.
Allison Cage: Originally from Wisconsin, I moved to Nashville almost four years ago to venture outside the Midwest and try something new. A short time after, I met my now husband. We just celebrated our one year anniversary and live in Brentwood.

When did you decide to become a Hair Stylist?

Kristen Womack: I have always loved the idea of making people look and feel beautiful. My first birthday party, in second grade, was at a salon where I wanted all my friends to get “makeovers”. I don’t know if there is a point in time where I didn’t plan to be a hair stylist. I finished college and have Bachelor of Arts degree, however, hair is where my heart is and about 5 years ago I decided to get that license to do what I love. It’s been the best decision ever.
Marie Griffies: When I was a little girl I loved playing with my friends and families hair. I just enjoyed being creative and trying different styles with hair. I got a salon receptionist job after graduating high school and got to really see what the life of a hairstylist was about. I started an apprenticeship in 2007 and got my license in 2009. I started working with an Aveda color educator and from then on I feel in love with hair color and decided to become a hair color specialist.
Allison Cage: After being a dancer for many years I knew I wanted to do something creative. I started in the beauty industry, thinking I wanted to do stage work and behind the scenes performance hair and makeup. After going through my courses at the Aveda Institute Minneapolis, I realized I loved the one on one connection with my guests and really making people feel good about themselves. The beauty industry is always changing and growing and I love that each day is different and exciting.

Tell us what your salon will offer?

We offer a variety of services including color services, cutting, blowouts, Brazilian Blowouts, special occasion styles, and facial waxing. At MAK Studio we offer clients a more personal salon atmosphere. One of the things we love about Franklin is that as big as is gets there’s still that small town vibe. It gives you a feeling of belonging and we want our clients to have that same experience when they come to our space. We are not a large salon and we don’t want to be. We are able to offer the same services you will find in a high volume salon but by staying small we can give our clients the attention they need to have the best look possible.

Why did you choose Franklin to open your first salon?

Opening our salon in Franklin was the only option for us. We love this place we live and work in and couldn’t imagine anywhere else to settle our salon. Most of our clients are local, but we have clients who travel from other places to get their hair done in Franklin and they love coming to our awesome little city.

What is your favorite part of the job?

Kristen Womack: The best part of doing hair is you are given the opportunity to make someone look their best. We have the experience and education needed to be great hair stylists, but we don’t stop there. Relationships with our clients are very important for us. Everyone is different and it is our goal to create something special for each person that sits in our chair. We get to make people pretty while creating lasting client relationships. It doesn’t get much better!
Marie Griffies: My Favorite part about doing hair is getting to see my clients smile and be so happy abbot the end result. Making people feel great about themselves is the best feeling in the world. I don’t consider this my “job” its not work for me its so fun! I look forward to coming in everyday and making my clients feel their best. I truly believe when you look good you feel good.
Allison Cage: My favorite part of the job is the people I get to work with everyday, our guests. We get to make people feel good about themselves and have a great time doing it!
