unnamed-10Kiran Thawardas is a graduating senior at Franklin Road Academy. He has attended Franklin Road Academy since Pre-K and will be attending the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor next year studying Mechanical Engineering. Kiran moved from Mumbai, India to America in 1999 and has lived in Tennessee ever since. He is the founder of the Nashville Unity in Diversity Peace Garden at the Scarritt Bennett, captain of his school’s swim and tennis teams, and is a drummer in the school’s jazz band and drum line. Kiran thanks his family, teachers and mentors for helping him get to this point.

What has been your proudest moment in high school?
My proudest moment would be the inauguration of the Unity in Diversity Peace Garden at the Scarritt Bennett Center last summer. The organization’s CEO, Peter Gorgievski, flew from Melbourne, Australia to attend and we were able to be the first inaugurated peace garden in the world.

What advice would you give freshmen coming into your school? 
Challenge yourself and get involved. The more that you do in high school does make for a better college resume, but more than that it makes for a great high school experience and leads you to success.

How has your school impacted your future?
Going to a small school has offered opportunities that I would have never expected. I have been able to join many organizations and hold leadership positions that I wouldn’t have been able to find at a larger school.

What are your plans for the future including college and a possible major to pursue?
I will be attending the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor next year majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
