After losing her long-term job in her hometown of Hohenwald, Dorothy was at a loss for how to move on with her life. At the age of 46 and the responsibility of taking care of her two kids as a single mother, losing her job was something that she couldn’t’ handle. Overwhelmed with the changes that were forced upon her, she turned to alcohol and drugs, losing everything. For more than 10 years, she struggled with getting clean, but it wasn’t until 2008 that she actively made a decision to change by entering a long-term treatment facility. During the program, she had trouble finding a job, but when others suggested Goodwill to her, she gave them a chance. Entering the Madison location, she received job training as a donations processor, eventually becoming a full-time garment tagger. Having the job through Goodwill, enabled her to stay sober, gain a place to live and transportation, as well as re-establishing her relationship with her family. She now helps others like her by helping to lead recovery support groups. Dorothy is just one of many people that Goodwill has helped.
