4 Holiday Gifts Dedicated to Making Lives Better

by Heather Listhartke

One of the most joyous times of the holiday season is when we give our loved ones gifts. Sometimes we spend a lot of time and energy thinking of a gift they will love. These 4 items not only make great gifts but they also support great artisans and organizations, so you can give back while gifting.  The best part? All of the items listed below can be found at A Moments Peace Salon and Day Spa, 9050 Carothers Pkwy in Franklin.

1.Bourbon & Boweties
Bourbon and Boweties, originally founded by Carley Ochs in 2012 out of Tampa Bay, Florida, produces thousands of pieces of hand-crafted, quality jewelry made by men and women living and working in the community with beautiful stones that Carley hand-selects herself from around the world. The company prides themselves on their jewelry that’s “Made by Proud Southern hands,” and promises to continue doing so.

2.The Giving Keys
These pieces of jewelry are unique in that each has a key with an engraved word on it. These words like Dream, Believe, Courage, Love, Inspire, Brave, and many more are for those who need that extra personal push to be strong and are great for both a gift to yourself and to others.

The company started when Caitlin Crosby, an actress and singer/songwriter, wore her New York hotel room key around her neck. She came up with the idea to engrave these keys with inspirational words. However, it wasn’t until she met Rob and Cera, originally a homeless couple off Hollywood Boulevard, that the company began. Cera did jewelry, and Caitlin asked them to be partners in the business after inviting them to dinner. The company now employs those transitioning out of homelessness, and the keys are now carried in over 1200 stores internationally. The company, dedicated to the “pay it forward” cause, encourages recycling the gifts through their company motto “Embrace your word, then pass it on to a person you feel needs the message more than you.” For Caitlin’s full story told by her, view her TEDTalk.

3.SCOUT Bags
SCOUT Bags was started in the early 2000s when Deb Johns was in Milan and saw a chic carryall that caught her eye. The price though was extremely expensive, and she remembered selling a more affordable and similar looking bag in a recent pop-up shop she had called Fifi. From there, she and her husband Ben started their collection named after a family dachshund named Scout. SCOUT, now, not only has bags but also carries accessories, coolers, storage, and rugs. Deb and John make giving back a priority for the company and their personal lives by participating and encouraging the community in many ways. Annually, they host the Go Bo Fund which benefits families who are trying to pay for medical expenses for pediatric cancer and day-to-day expenses of raising their families.

4.Goodnight Nashville
This book features a collection of illustrated works that features Nashville landmarks and experiences. The author, Jennifer Osland Hillen, accountant for a local girls’ school, volunteers in the community regularly and understands how much Nashvillians care for their city. After the birth of her daughter, she came up with the idea of creating the artistic narrative about Nashville because she wanted to share her own love of the city. The book celebrates all that is wonderful about this place we call home, and she hopes it will inspire pride in all fans of Music City near and far, young and old.
