5 Common Lawn Care Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

watering a lawn

There’s a lot of information out there regarding lawn care and it can be overwhelming. Here are 5 common lawn care mistakes and tips on how to avoid them.

Not Testing Soil

The first mistake many make when landscaping is not testing the soil. Most people should do this every three years. A soil test will tell you a lot about your lawn and help you figure out what you need to do to best take care of your soil, such as what kind of nutrients or fertilizer you might need.

Using the Wrong Amendments

Many people use the wrong soil amendments as well. This is also going to be the case for using the wrong amount of fertilizer on your lawn. You have to make sure that the fertilizer is going to have the right amount of phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium. You should also need to follow the recommendations for the application rates and calibrate the spreader. In order to get the best results, you are going to want to do this during the fall. This is because the roots are going to expand.

Using Inferior Grass Seed

Another common mistake is using the wrong type of seed or an inferior seed for your grass. Of course, this is going to be based on the region that you live in. Therefore, you will need to read the label of the seed that you are buying to make sure it is exactly what you are going to need for your lawn. Some of the things that you are going to be able to find on the label is the type of seed, percent of the weed seeds, how many of the ingredients that are not seed, and the germination rate of your home grass.

Trying to Grow Grass in the Wrong Location

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you are not going to be able grow grass in certain areas.. This is because the grass is not going to be able to grow everywhere. This is going to be especially true if the lawn is going to have a lot of shade. In order for your lawn to survive, it is going to need at lease 5 hours of bright sunlight. Therefore, you might need to cut down on the shade.

Watering Too Much or Not Enough

The fifth mistake for lawn care is applying too much water or not enough water to your lawn. You need to water the lawn in the morning so that the water on the grass is going to be able to dry during the day. This is the best way to help make sure that your lawn is not going to get fungal disease. When it is growing season, the lawn is going to need 1 inch of water a week to allow it to grow properly.
