Chipped or cracked paint
Compromised wood will expand and contract based on its moisture level. This causes the outermost layer of paint to start to chip away. One area where you are most likely to see this is around a window sill. These areas are known to catch rain water and should be one of the first places you search when looking for rotten wood.
