Asheville, NC
Tucked away in the mountains of eastern Tennessee/western North Carolina, Asheville rests between three huge national forests. Rafting, camping, hiking, even gold-panning list among the many recreations within spitting distance of Asheville.
Great Smoky Mountain National Park lays to the northwest, Pisgah National Forest to the northeast, Cherokee National F
orest to the north, and the beautiful Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area, full of breathtaking lakes and high ridges, to the south.
As for Asheville itself, the city offers history and a night life, and cool summer nights at its 2,134 foot elevation. Asheville loves its mirobrews and music, just like Nashville, but puts its own twist on it. Enjoy local live music in the cool Appalachian air at any of its bars and decks.
The Biltmore, built by George Vanderbilt in 1895 as a retreat reminiscent of the grand castles and estates of France and Britain, looks like a fairy-tale castle in the mountains. It is the largest private home in America, with 250 rooms, and offers a winery and other events.
Other attractions include the North Carolina Arboretum and the Folk Art Center.
