20 Years of Walking for Wellness

Moore Elementary is celebrating 20 years of “Walk to Wellness” on May 10 & 11, 2012. Fourth graders have been training for weeks for this walk down the Natchez Trace. The walk begins near Leiper’s Fork and 18 miles are crossed on the first day.

Students return to the school for a pizza party and dodge ball game after their hike. Then they unroll their sleeping bags and crash in the gym until morning. A nine mile trek leaves students at the base of Jackson Falls near a clear pool. Busses take them almost back to school where they are dropped off one mile from their destination to finish the “Homecoming Walk.”

This rite-of-passage event has become legend at Moore and over 1200 students have participated. “We feel that it gives every student willing to do the training an opportunity to set a goal, work towards that goal and feel the sense of accomplishment that goes along with that,” says John Parks, Physical Education Instructor.

Students remember and cherish their experiences in the walk. “You feel like you’ve completed something huge and your feet feel like they’re going to break and you’re going to collapse,” Gabriel Brown, Walk Participant 2011. This year 68 students, 35 parents and 6 teachers will complete the walk. Alumni of previous walks are encouraged to attend. A reception follows on May 11th for alumni
