door-66. Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica
St. Peter’s Basilica has long been held in high regard as one of the holiest places in the Catholic Faith and one of the greatest designs of both Michelangelo and Bramante. It has become a place of tourism and religious sabbatical because of its connection to the Catholic religion and the resting place of Saint Peter. The doors represent the passing from this life into the presence of God.

Every 25 years, on the first day of The Holy Year, the Pope strikes the brick wall with a hammer to knock it down which reveals the bronze panels made by Vico Consorti.

The panels tell the story of the redemption of man’s sin through God’s mercy such as the disobedience of Adam and Eve, Mary’s announcement of salvation, baptism by Jesus, the prodigal son, and the giving of the holy spirit. The door was specifically designed to be peaceful, but expressive through a symmetrical layout. There has also been several additions and add-ons throughout the years by many of the popes as a celebration of the holy years.
