computer hacked

Williamson County Schools (WCS) informed parents about a security incident involving one of the district’s third party vendors. On May 17, the district was alerted that Edmodo, a free classroom tool that allows students and teachers to share files and assignments, had been hacked. As a result, the Edmodo usernames, encrypted passwords and email addresses listed in Edmodo user accounts were acquired by an unauthorized third party. This affects approximately 33,000 current and former WCS students dating back to 2011.

Based on the information the district has received, WCS technology experts believe this breach poses minimal risk to students, staff and parents. However, as a proactive measure, WCS in the process of changing all student WCS passwords. This is a complex process and it will take until June 19, 2017, to complete. Beginning on June 20, 2017, students/guardians will be able to retrieve their new password directly from school personnel in the front office.
