WilCo Soccer Takes on Challengers

Soccer

Williamson County has dominated the Tennessee soccer scene as of late. The last three Class AAA champions reside from the Williamson County School system – Brentwood (2012) and Franklin (2013,2014).

In total, the county claims eight TSSAA boys soccer state titles in the 28 years the sport has been sanctioned.

Once again, the WCS schools in Class AAA will test themselves against quality opponents from all directions as Independence High School hosts the 2015 Williamson County Versus Tournament April 9-12.

“About five years ago I had the idea to create a competitive tournament in Middle Tennessee because there are so many quality programs here that want to be challenged and continue to grow in the national spotlight,” Indy coach Josh Phillips said. “Each Williamson County team would typically travel to a tournament hours away and we decided to invite some of the best programs from surrounding states to come and challenge Williamson County’s powerful soccer programs. Since the tournament’s inception we have had teams represented from Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma and East, West and Central Tennessee.”

The six WCS soccer squads (Brentwood, Centennial, Franklin, Independence, Ravenwood, Summit) welcome three teams from Oklahoma and three other schools from outside Middle Tennessee.

Visiting teams are Norman North (OK), Jenks (OK), Edmond North (OK), Cookville, St. Georges, and Christian Academy of Knoxville.

The 12 teams will compete at four venues over the next four days with the following points system:

  • Wins equal 6 points plus 1 point per goal (up to 3)
  • Ties equal 3 points plus 1 point per goal (up to 3)
  • Loss equals 0 points plus 1 point per goal (up to 3)
  • Bonus: 1 point for a shutout (excluding 0-0 tie)

Williamson County has not won the event since 2012 – Brentwood. Norman North and Edmond North have won the last two years.

Each coach like the challenge against tough competition as it prepars them for postseason play according to Phillips.

“I think all the coaches in Williamson County really enjoy a good competition and how it prepares our teams for both our district tournament and our eventual run at the state tournament,” he said. “Williamson County has become a hotspot for soccer and all eight of our high schools are not only competitive but sometimes some of the best programs in the state.”
