Franklin Road Academy held a 9-3 lead on Friday against Columbia Academy when the game was cancelled due to lightning.

A lightning delay was called at 8:22 p.m. with three minutes and 14 seconds left in the second quarter. The initial delay was set to last 30 minutes, as long as the lightning detector fastened above FRA’s press box didn’t detect any strikes in the area.

The stands were cleared and at 9:30 the public address announcer declared the fate of the game would be determined at 10.

The game was ultimately cancelled and won’t be rescheduled.

Columbia Academy opened the game with a 14-play, eight-minute drive that ended with a 30-yard field goal. CA ran the ball to FRA’s two-yard line, but a holding penalty pushed it back to the 21 and it was unable to recover.

FRA’s first offensive possession was similar to CA’s, as the Panthers began the drive with a 41-yard run by Adonis Otey.

A defensive pass interference penalty setup first-and-10 from the 14-yard-line.

However, two short runs and a six-yard sack pushed the Panthers back to the 21, where they settled for a 37-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

The teams traded three-and-outs and CA lost a fumble on the first play of its third drive. After forcing the turnover, FRA began its drive at CA’s 35-yard-line, and after runs by Otey and Canaan Catlett, Adrian Roper rushed 23 yards for a touchdown.

FRA missed the extra point but led 9-3.

The Panthers forced another three-and-out on its next defensive stand, but snuck in just two offensive plays before the game was delayed.
